Approximately 150 students attended the event, representing several high schools from throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Originally founded by former President Barack Obama in 2014, My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) is an initiative focused on closing and eliminating opportunity gaps and building strong, lasting bridges to opportunity for boys and girls, young men and young women, no matter what their background or the circumstances into which they were born.
The theme for this year’s symposium was “Unlocking Your Superpower,” and in addition to powerful presentations and musical performances geared toward empowering youth to harness their skills, students engaged in team building exercises and breakout sessions throughout the day. Jovia’s financial literacy presentation, entitled “Save Your Superpower,” was led by Christopher DiLeonardo, Educational Development Officer and Richard Tavarez, Community Relations Officer, who emphasized the importance of controlling impulse purchases and setting long-term money saving goals. Jovia was also the t-shirt sponsor of the event, ensuring all those in attended received a commemorative shirt.
