Good sportsmanship, teamwork and engagement was on full display as Jovia Financial Credit Union employees participated in a wheelchair basketball game at The Viscardi Center with Viscardi Center students. The Viscardi Center, located in Albertson, NY, “is a non-profit organization that educates, employs and empowers children, adults and veterans with disabilities or similar needs, so we can all discover the love of learning, the power of work, the freedom of independent living and the self-confidence to fulfill our dreams.”
The Viscardi Center and Jovia are long-time community partners, and the Jovia-Viscardi Exhibition Basketball game brought together ten Jovia team members to play wheelchair basketball against the Viscardi Center’s Cougars, which are comprised of seventh through twelfth grade students who participate competitively for The Henry Viscardi School Wheelchair Basketball Program. “The energy and competitive spirit of these youthful and talented teenagers was both contagious and humbling,” said Jovia’s Community Relations Officer Richard Tavarez.
The event was coordinated by Jovia’s DE&I committee to foster and create an inclusive culture, engage with the community, and provide opportunities for employees to come together. While everyone on the court were winners, the Cougars beat Team Jovia by a score of 50-20.
Earlier in May 2024, The Viscardi Center was recognized by the Long Island Imagine Awards as the 2024 Hall of Fame award recipient, with Jovia Financial Credit Union presenting the award as the sponsor of the Hall of Fame category.
Created in 2012, the Imagine Awards honor non-profit organizations and recognizes their outstanding performances in the respective sectors.
